Matsu To reduce membrane fouling of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, we adopted layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. LbL assembly has received attention as a means of preparing ultrathin layers of composite membranes. In addition, it can suppress membrane fouling due to its hydrophilicity. In this study, we deposited polyelectrolytes on a commercial RO membrane via LbL assembly and especially investigated the effect of layer number on membrane properties. The obtained membranes exhibited antifouling properties, such as high water permeability and high ion rejection, against various hydrophobic foulants. In addition, membrane hydrophilicity increased and surface roughness became smooth as layer number increased. We also found an optimum layer number that admitted highest water permeability. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation measurements revealed that the polyelectrolyte multilayer indeed suppresses foulant adsorption. Protein conformational change was low on the polyelectrolyte film surface, compared with that on the polyamide layer. 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Preparation of Novel Thin-Film Composite Nanofiltration Membranes for Separation of Amoxicillin
Several novel composite membranes were prepared to separate and recycle amoxicillin from pharmaceutical wastewater via nanofiltration process. The synthesis of these membranes included three stages: 1- preparation of polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes as a support via phase separation process, 2- modification of its surface by interfacial polymerization as a selective layer (polyamide), and ...
متن کاملEffect of Organoclay on the Performance of Reverse Osmosis Membrane
This study investigated the effect of Cloisite15A (C15A) organoclay in the substrate layer on the performance of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. The substrate of the RO membranes was modified using different loading of C15A (ranging from 0.3 - 0.7 wt%) within polysulfone (PSf) substrate and the polyamide (PA) selective layer was formed on the top. Effect of the modified substrate layer on the w...
متن کاملMechanisms Involved in Osmotic Backwashing of Fouled Forward Osmosis (FO) Membranes
Organic matter leads to one of the biggest problems in membranes: fouling. Developing efficient cleaning processes is therefore crucial. This study systematically examines how alginic acid fouling formed under different physical and chemical conditions affect osmotic backwashing cleaning efficiency in forward osmosis (FO). The fouling layer thickness before and after osmotic backwashing was mea...
